Here's that focal mechanism again. The sun is important to this story, it often sets an unstated mood. But look in the background, a kid will make the connection between it being there now, and somewhere else on a later page. It marks that arrow lizard as something Bushie will interact with. |

There are a few wordy pages in this books, ie: betwixt. I firmly believe that the audience shouldn't be patronized. Kids should ask questions about stories regardless, so some vocabulary thrown into the mix can't hurt. |

Uh oh, what's all this then? There are a few hooks like this that will have later consequences. Though there is an overarching plot there are a few lessons along the way. |

The Ramblin' Mushroom here does not factor into the story, so he has not been brought to full attention. This technique also lets me populate the Forest with other creatures without stuffing them down someone's throat. It shows that other stories are unfolding all around this one, and a kid can extrapolate the stories themselves. I think this benefits a story that otherwise directs you from beginning to end. |

With the other characters here I should talk about the artstyle. This was chosen as a combination of factors. I found it appealing, and I also figured it would set it apart stylistically from a lot of the other offerings. You'll notice that only the main characters or those that interact with Bushie are coloured in. This is a focal conceit. |
