Less than Enthusiastic
Earthbound must be a very strange game to attract comments ranging from "this sucks" to "I'm gonna go make a website about this." Of course, I loved it enough to go online and type in Earthbound.com and hope for something. All of my friends, however, were less than enthusiastic.
My living room was pretty big, and I always have some friends over at one point during the week. The first time I showed it to my friends, none of them showed avid devotion like I. I was oblivious to their reactions for a while, and it wasn't until Captain Strong (I started at the beginning so they wouldn't miss out) did somebody speak. "So... Uh...I don't see what's so good about this game."
I started at him quizically. Then I noticed that the others behind me had probably long ago stopped paying attention. One was reading a book and the other somehow snuck off to my kitchen and got some chocolate without me noticing. I collected my anger, though, before speaking. "Earthbound's an RPG, and somewhat old, sure, but it's got a style that no other RPGs have... and..." By the looks on their faces, they didn't care at all.
I guess that the reason they had no interest was because there was a Counter Strike rage going on (And... still is, with the release of Scource). Most of my weekends were devoted to CS during that time as well, even with Earthbound in my life. Another reason would be that they have no idea what RPGs were. Yes, my generation of 6th graders were very sad back then.
"Thanks a lot, guys," I said, turning off the TV. "Let's just go play CS."
"Yay!"
