Giegue and Giygas, one and the same?
Wow, 4th article. Guess now's as good a time as any to say thank you to the tireless (and probably clinically insane) staff of Starmen.net for keeping this site running so smoothly and beautiful. It's a real joy. And no, I'm not sucking up. Also, I want to thank all of you who have read my other articles, and put up with the style and length of some of them. Now, on to the peanutbuttery cheesy goodness of the article! (Brought to you by Mr. Saturn Bows Inc. of Saturn Valley, EagleLand)
At the end of EB0, you see (presumably) Ninten's dad at the phone, saying that "something new has come up". Perfect lead-in for EarthBound. Also, I believe that Giegue and Giygas are one and the same, here are the reasons:
1. Giegue vows revenge
2. He also apparently despises humans
3. He hates Ninten
Now, how does Giegue become Giygas? Simple, when you sang the Song at the end of EB0, Giegue couldn't state the feeling (love) and it shattered his mind, he went nuts. The only thing he knew was his strongest emotion, utter hatred for humans and Ninten. Then, he did what most overly-obsessed video game villains do, he trained, and trained, and trained, and in that training, become the "embodiment of evil". Hence, the Giygas we all love to hate in EarthBound. Also, the basic similarities in attacks "Giegue's attack can not be understood" and "You cannot grasp the true form of Giygas' attack".
Consider though, that Giygas' mind wasn't quite as badly messed up as we all think when he first travels time to the cave of the past. Maybe he knew that he was where the caves on Mt. Itoi would be so many years down the road, and set up a base (mothership?), or gathered immense amounts of energy to help Giegue defeat Ninten? Maybe it's my imagination (or faulty memory, it's been a little while since I've been to the cave of the past), but the caves on Mt. Itoi seem a lot like the cave of the past (aside from the ice-age look).
This also brings to mind another obvious question. Are Ninten and Ness one and the same? Just a quick look at the facts given here would suggest so. The simple fact that Giegue vows revenge and "We shall meet again" speak volumes.
However, taking a slightly deeper look, George (Ninten's great grandfather) is the one who stole the secret (Psi?) from the Giygans (Giegue and Giygas' race). So, Giegue would appear to be following the traditional kill-the-descendant route here.
Following the same basic idea, this would lead us to believe that Ninten is either Ness' father (most likely, for these assumptions) or older ancestor. Since EB0 is given a definite time frame in the early 1980's (80 years after the early 1900's), and EarthBound is more vague (199X), the only plausible assumption to make is that EarthBound occurs no earlier than one year after EB0 and no later than 10.
If EB does, in fact occur only one year after EB0, then Ninten and Ness could, quite possibly be the same person. Seeing as how all information (one source, NoJ's Mother Hero Profile page (Page title is from Anthadd's article "Why the Ys Don't Match")) points to Ninten being 12, and in the EarthBound Player's guide (P. 120) we find that Ness is 13.
There is also the fact that Ninten's house and Ness' old house (flashback from Fire Spring) are quite similar, and the dog that Ninten has could be King as a pup, et cetera, but I digress. However, this doesn't explain what would happen to Ninten/Ness' other sister, perhaps she died at some point, ran away, or was kidnapped and never rescued?
Now, for a different theory, if EB0 and EB are 10 years apart, this wouldn't make it very easy for Ninten to even be Ness' father, much less an older ancestor. In order for that to have happened, Ness would've had to have been born when Ninten was 9 (Ninten would only be 22 in 199X if it's 10 years later, and Ness is 13).
Based on the facts and logical assumptions we can make, we can finally conclude that EB0 and EB are two of the most mind-warping games ever developed by sick, twisted, sadistic people. Hahah, finally, some humor . Anyway, as I was saying, IF there is any connection between Ninten and Ness, it would most likely be that they are the same person, or, perhaps, even cousins?
Now, I know this article started as just something on how Giegue and Giygas are probably the same being, and I just wouldn't shut up, and now your head probably hurts and you want to put a bounty out for my death/severe dismemberment, and you're probably still left with a lot of questions. But those questions are for someone smarter than me, I'm just doing my best. Maybe someone can kidnap Itoi and finally force him to spill everything about this series, until then, we can only guess.
