StarBound Earth Wars?
By now you've seen it. The critics are ALL over Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. They claim it was unoriginal - it was slow paced - it was overhyped. Give me a break. Slow paced? The very first scene involves a huge lightsaber battle! Unoriginal? Well, besides the fact that the 'unoriginal' argument has no foundation if you just sit back and enjoy the movie, the 'pre' in prequel is there for a reason. And overhyped? What is it with the media being like one big, fat, rich hypocrite? They created the hype, they should blame themselves for that. Its like the media reporting that the MEDIA is to blame for school threats and shootings. How intelligent is that? That's like going up to someone and saying "I really shouldn't be talking at all". And if, despite my arguments, you think that Episode 1 was a disappointment still, George Lucas himself was quoted as saying that "Its just a movie"! Ah well, enough of my ravings, I'm here to compare Star Wars and EarthBound. The similarities are striking.
A young, unlikely hero stars EarthBound. Star Wars has, of course, Anakin Skywalker, who is much younger, but still unexpected (unless you knew the entire plot of the movie ahead of time :)
The young hero in both EarthBound and Star Wars has remarkable psychokinetic powers. Anakin, of course, hasn't learned to use his to their full extent yet, but Ness has a few years on him.
Maniacal aliens are rampant in EarthBound, and equally so in The Phantom Menace. Did you see Darth Maul, the freaky guy with the red and black face? George Lucas MUST have been attempting to defeat Giygas when he came up with that :) And, although not everyone noticed him, a very young and chubby Greedo (or one of Greedo's race) was one of Anakin's friends who cheered him at the race. Does anyone else think that the little Greedo looked like a complex (yet equally quiet) Tenda?
Aside from aliens, robots also seem to go nuts or become just plain evil. Those darn battle droids are no different from the Starmen, Octobots, or Reactor Robots found everywhere in EB.
I may be going out on a limb here, but if you think about it, the Mr. Saturns and the Gengans (spelling?) are alike in every way but looks. They talk with a funny accent (which I suppose would translate into a different font on an RPG, like the Mr. Saturn font). They have WEIRD English skills (Whosa isa yousa? For example), much like the Mr. Saturns struggle to make complete sentences. My English teacher would go absolutely nuts if I turned in a paper written in the Mr. Saturn font and dialect!
Did anyone check out the Super Smash Bros pic of Ness wielding the light saber (or, as its known in SSB, the light sword)? There is an obvious indication that those wacky guys at HAL Labs are Star Wars freaks too :)
Of course some of my reasoning is wrong, unbased, or just stupid. We all know that Ness doesn't grow up to become the epitome of evil, wearing a black mask and breathing through a scuba filter. Well, maybe he does. We can't say for sure. Instead of having some oxygen converter / lung support device on his back, he'll have a BLACK (heheh) backpack with a spiked bat. And instead of the foreboding helmet he'll wear a black Gilligan-beach-surfer-guy hat and grow his hair out long. And he'll smash people's heads using PSI Squish. Heheheh... yeah, I can see it now - "Ummm... did you just insult my hat? *SQUISH*"
