Unanswered Questions, Part 2

Returning to Pokey's house, Pokey's dad sends Pokey and Picky up to their rooms and apologizes to Ness about the whole things. He then just says out loud about Ness's dad owing him a lot of money and that now the Mounich family lives in poverty.
Question. What big loan? And for what was it used for?
Upon leaving, Buzz Buzz gets swatted and tells Ness about the eight Your Sanctuaries. He also gives Ness the Sound Stone. Ness leaves and goes to town, stopping by the libary. There the librarian gives Ness a map, and explains how to use it.
Okay, so why does a public libary only lend out maps? And, why is this one of only two places that has washrooms?
Ness continues on into the suburbs of Onett and goes to the downtown arcade. There are members of Shark everywhere - and Ness gets into many fights before finally reaching Franky. Franky is brandishing two knives, swearing (sort of,) and has a large, fighting robot to deal with you later. After winning, Franky becomes all nice and tries to help you out. Why in the game of EarthBound is a person trying to stab Ness? How could have (ahem) Franky built the robot or anyone else in the Sharks gang? Why is Ness so uh, friendly and forgivable?
Franky tells Ness about Mayor Pirkle holding the key to the shack and that Ness should get the key to reach the first Your Sanctuary point. Ness goes and gets the key from Pirkle who throws in some line about not taking any responsibility.
Why did the citizens of Onett elect Pirkle as mayor anyway?
Ness heads north to the shack and unlocks it. Behind it, Ness discovers the entrance to the first Your Sanctuary puzzle/maze whatever. On the final part of the cave, there is the Titanic Ant. Ness battle with it and wins. He then sees Giant Step and hears a faint melody. The sound stone records it. Why is there a big titanic ant blocking an entrance? Why haven't the police looked into this matter? Why not just rock repell up the hill side instead? How can a stone record music?
