The Secrets of Earthbound
First off, with this being the first point-counterpoint style article on EB.Net, I would like to establish the identity of the two writers. You probably know me, Mars, your brand new article/fanfic/comic guy. You might also know Spiffage, who’s been on EB.Net since the very beginning but has stayed in the shadows until this summer. Spiffage was the one who introduced Earthbound to me more than two years ago; we’ve known each other for nine.
As I play Earthbound more and more often, peculiar traits start to pop up. One of the greatest discoveries (from a programmer’s standpoint) has been the Debug Menu, the use of which I have only recently perfected. With it all sorts of things can be discovered, such as items that were never used (Temporary goods and Video relaxant), hints that were never given, what happens if you spy on a coil snake, and what Poo’s level 1 stats are. All kinds of fantastic knowledge can be gathered through this device... but will it ever be enough?
I believe that without actually getting the source code to Earthbound, we will never know all of its secrets. Some people may claim to know everything there is to know about the game, but as I have proven in previous articles, they are probably deluding themselves. Without the source code, there will always be new things to be discovered, and new theories to be made about how the game works. In fact, I’ve already showed how without the Game Genie, our knowledge of the game wouldn’t be anywhere close to the level it is today. But as we all know, this is one of the qualities of Earthbound that has kept it new and exciting in the eyes of its fans.
