EarthBound Post Y2K
Good day all. For those of you who may have noticed, yes this is my first article. I hope my point is found valid and true in your mind, because that is my purpose of this article. Enough introduction, on to the good stuff.
I'm sure all of you have heard of the Y2K threat. For those of you who haven't it is an error which will occur 1/1/2000 due to the way years are viewed by computers, the last two digits. As soon as we hit the year 2000 it will be viewed by the computer as "00" and displayed to the viewer as 1900 instead of 2000. This supposedly would cause a "domino effect" eventually sending the world's electric systems and more into destruction or at least put them out of commission for a while. Well there's some background for you.
It is in my strong belief that the events which occured in Earthbound take place past the year 2000 instead of 199X. Although the game first states that the year is 199X, there are many signs, if you would like to call them that, which indicate that this game occurs in 200X. First of all I have noticed that there are no televisions in any houses. Now in 199X (being the year 1990-1999) nearly every home had a television. I would have presumed that Earthbound took place in the past, 198X or so, except for that fact that there was a television in the junk yard of the Tenda Village. Since that it is in the junk yard this proves that televisions we're operative and in use... until broken, in this case probably the cable stations' satellites were destroyed or made inoperative by the Y2K threat, making the television useless and in other words, junk. I also noticed the lack of other household devices such as a stove, or a radio. In Ness' house his mom always prepares a dish of steak for him but I see no stove or microwave visible. I know this sounds crazy but it may be possible that she cooks it over a portable heating device, or maybe even a fire O_o.
Another piece of evidence I have found is the advanced technological potential that this video game presents. Just look at this... Dr Andonuts creates machines which act like hovercrafts yet there are no devices visible which propell the machine off the ground. (This would be the Sky Runner) Also, there is the Phase Distorters... both versions are currently impossible as of 1999 (unless hidden by the military) in 199X. This piece of evidence supports the fact that Earthbound probably occured in 200X instead of 199X.
Well here's my theory that Earthbound happened after Y2K. This brings a conclusion to my article and my point. As I exit, I would like to leave you with one more chunk of evidence. Y2K would probably slow down the production of clothing etc... Ever wonder why Ness or anyone else doesnt change clothes?
