The Mouthwatering World of Earthbound

We've all felt it. As we wander around Fourside, peering up at the towering skyscrapers, dodging the possessed taxis, and wondering why there's a CafîZnstead of a Bar, we feel hungry. We call up the Mach Pizza Guy, and minutes later he runs up to us and hands us our nice, cheesy pizza. We imagine Ness sinking his teeth into that scintillating cheese, toppings, sauce, and dough, and tasting the sweet Italian food in all it's glory. Hunger. Or maybe we are walking around Onett, fresh after a battle with the Sharks and their pathetic robot, and we feel hungry. A quick look in the garbage can reveals a Hamburger. Once again, we can imagine our favorite character eating the wonderful-tasting food, topped off with some fresh (hopefully...it's from the garbage after all) lettuce and tomatoes. More hunger. Some of us, myself included, can admit to craving these foods, right after playing Earthbound. Why? Earthbound makes you hungry, it's as simple as that. This is probably due to the amount of food items included with the game, especially our favorites. I've decided to write an analysis on the food cravings that Earthbound gives us, and answer my own question, can a game truly make you hungry, or do I just like food a little too much? Well, it certainly made me hungry. I can remember ordering a pizza in the game, and suddenly having the urge to order a pizza in real life. I even did it once. Plus, you have the whole thing at the beginning where you enter your favorite food. My favorite food is something that my mom makes called goulash, which is a mixture of macaroni noodles, tomato sauce, ground hamburger, and parmesan cheese (no, I'm not a 30-year-old who lives with his mom, I'm only 16). After entering shortening the word to "goulas" for Earthbound so it'd fit, every time I'd go talk to my Mother in the game and listen to her tell me that she's making me some goulash, I'd crave it right away. Starmen.net forumer...err...message boarder, EvilGiegue (the guy with the coolest avatar ever) says, "It really doesn't help that it keeps mentionning your favorite food all the time..." I couldn't have said it better myself, EvilGiegue. As stated before, pizza was the same way, for me anyway. A little weird, I know, but it's true. To add to this article, and to make myself appear less food-crazy, I've included some experiences submitted by Starmen.net's faithful message-boarders. Has anybody ever wondered how Ness fits all that stuff in his backpack? I mean, he carries LOTS of stuff, from a pizza you've carried from Twoson to the Diamond Dog (thanks Claw!), mammoth burgers, brain food lunches, and even a Jar of Fly Honey for a LONG time. Well, maybe he has a cooler in there! Ultra Runaway Rabid Dog says, "Ness's backpack=stolen cooler!" That makes me thirsty, not hungry. Think about it (again), beating a big boss like the Titanic Ant and celebrating with a nice cold can of...whatever kind of pop they drink in Earthbound. EB Cola, we'll call it. Drinking a big can of EB Cola would be wonderful after all the bashing Ness does with his bat! It's only logical to carry a cooler! It must be true!

Then there's the really freaky-sounding food. Like peanut-cheese bars for example. Those Mr. Saturns must know how to cook. I've always imagined a peanut-cheese bar to be a cross between a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup and a slice of Kraft Singles. Sounds sick I know, but hey, both of them taste good, why not mix them? Again, it's only logical! As said by Featherbop (what a catchy name), "Every time I go to saturn valley I get hungry cause I want Peanut-cheese bars and Pig jelly. Those sound the best." While I don't want to think about what on Earth Pig jelly is, the peanut-cheese bars still sound delicious.

One more reference that just couldn't be left out. The jar of delisauce. DiamondDog says, "Jar of Delisauce sounds awesome. And so do the Brain Food Lunches." I have not the absolute slightest clue of what this jar of sauce is or even contains. A deli is a place where you select food, not a food itself. Sauce is usually put on top of something. Now, while it sounds quite entertaining to take a jar of sauce and throw it on a deli and run, I doubt this is what they meant in Earthbound. Maybe a new idea devised by some evil food genius who plans to take over the entire western hemisphere to grow food and work the economy for his own petty needs, or something to that effect I'm sure. And I won't even start on the whole topic of Brain Food Lunches. I will say, however, that I pray we are not eating somebody's brain every time we order Ness to sink his teeth into one of these lunches. Well, there ya go. I firmly believe that Earthbound makes you hungry, mainly due to the fact that it is one of the only RPG's that uses actual food that we can relate to, not just things like "herbs." Pizzas, French fries, peanut-cheese bars, and more all make people hungry, end-of-story. Well, as with all my articles, feel free to submit more hunger stories about Earthbound by clicking on my spiffy little linkified name. This is EB 4 GBA, signing off.

P.S. I'd like more submissions for other series of articles that I've done, such as "Earthbound Zero's New Name", where I discuss possible names for the re-release of Mother 1/Earthbound Zero, and "Extra Earthbound Stuff", where I discuss extra goodies that could be included with the re-release of the Mother/Earthbound series. So, if you have any ideas that relate to these topics, get sending!

P.P.S. Another big thanks to Pappycat for being an awesome article staffer. If you ever get the special chance, tell her thanks!
