The End of EarthBound
It is my belief that the future of Earthbound 64 is a subject that has had the life kicked out of it, at least from the "when is it going to come out?" or the "what platform is it going to be on?" perspective. I am interested in theorizing whether it is going to be any good. There is a good chance that it will be a let down.
I assume that the majority of my readers have seen screenshots of Earthbound 64. It is obviously in a 3D, polygonal world. Wow, look at the fancy graphics! But anyone who has been around in this world knows that graphics account for very little in terms of enjoyment. With that on the mind, I point out that EB 64 is not necessarily going to be an instant classic. It could just as easily be terrible. After all, many next-generation sequels have screwed different series over.
Witness Final Fantasy 7. The CG sequences were fantastic. But the gameplay, mystical feeling, and many other things took a back seat, creating an inferior game (I would like to point out that that doesn't necessarily make it a bad game, I won't state my opinion here). And the reason? The developers became too ambitious, tried to push things too far, and forgot about gameplay. In many ways, the old 16-bit systems that limited graphics were better. We should hope and pray that HAL labs has the foresight to concentrate more on gameplay, and less on graphics. Thanks for reading, please respond.
